The Monastery of Ravanica is an endowment of
Prince Lazar Hrebeljanović and is located near Ćuprija. Ravanica was completed
around 1386-1388 and stylistically belongs to the beginnings of the School of Morava.
Following Lazar’s death on Vidovdan in 1389, his relics were transferred from
Pristina to Ravanica in 1392. Since then, Ravanica has been a place of
pilgrimage and a cultural center, and it can be said that most of the folk
songs about Kosovo and Kosovo’s heroes were written in Ravanica. During the
Migration of the Serbs in 1690, the monks had to leave their temple and,
carrying the relics of Prince Lazar, they came first to Szentendre, and then to
the neglected Monastery of Vrdnik, which received the epithet of Sremska
Ravanica (Ravanica of Srem). The
renovation of the monastery began in 1717, which was later supported by Karađorđe,
Miloš Obrenović and their successors. The relics of Prince Lazar were
transferred from Vrdnik to Belgrade in 1942, and only in 1989 were they
returned to Ravanica, his endowment.
