The Monastery of Gradac was built by the Queen Helen,
the wife of King Uroš I, popularly known as Helen of Anjou, who was buried
there in 1314. It was built in the last quarter of the 13th century, and lies
on the slopes of Golija Mountain, near the town of Brvenik. The greatest
flourishing of the monastery took place in the 14th century, when there were
many monks in it. In the times that came, the monastery went through difficult
periods, with a more serious renovation beginning only after the Second World
War. There are two churches in the monastery complex - one is dedicated to the Most
Holy Mother of God, and the other to St. Nicholas. The appearance of Queen
Helens endowment has great similarities with the temples of central and
southern Italy. The Church of the Mother of God presents a skillful combination
of a large number of Gothic features with the traditional forms of the Ra
ška School.
